Male Incontinence

Male incontinence, or leaking urine, is a condition that can severely impact quality of life. This often occurs as a result of an enlarged prostate, dysfunctional bladder, or other condition affecting ability to hold urine. Commonly, this is seen after treatment for prostate cancer or an enlarged prostate (radiation or surgery).

Fortunately, this is usually treatable. This can be treated conservatively with attention to behavioral and dietary contributors, pelvic floor physical therapy, or medications. Refractory or advanced cases may require a procedure to correct.

Dr. Uhr is currently treating incontinent men and accepting new patients with this condition. He offers various surgical options including placement of sling and artificial urinary sphincter implant.

What is Male Incontinence and how is it treated?

Male incontinence is the unintentional loss of urine in men. It can result from aging, prostate surgery, nerve damage, or other medical conditions. Treatment depends on the cause and severity but may include pelvic floor exercises, lifestyle changes, medications, or medical devices. In more advanced cases, surgical options like urethral slings or artificial urinary sphincters may be recommended to help restore bladder control and improve quality of life.

How does a urethral sling work?

A urethral sling supports the urethra, helping to keep it closed during physical activity to prevent urine leakage in men with incontinence.

How does a urethral sphincter implant work?

A urethral sphincter implant, also known as an artificial urinary sphincter, is a device used to treat severe male incontinence. It consists of a cuff placed around the urethra, a pump in the scrotum, and a fluid-filled reservoir. When the cuff is inflated, it keeps the urethra closed to prevent leakage. To urinate, the man squeezes the pump, deflating the cuff and allowing urine to pass. After a few minutes, the cuff automatically refills and closes the urethra again.
